You've summarized exactly why I -- and a lot of other people -- have
little or nothing to do with plant/gardening societies!

If daylily sales are down this year it's not my fault! I've purchased at
least three dozen varieties so far this year, and I still need
late-season bloomers. Right now the only ones blooming are the
re-bloomers like 'Bitsy' and 'Happy Returns.'

You're right, though, it seems like everyone and their brother has a
large display of daylilies. In many nurseries (and I mean
"mom-and-pops," not K-Mart) I've seen less-than-spectacular unlabeled
plants in gallon pots priced at $6-10 each. Usually these are the
cast-offs of breeding programs, normally sold in bulk as "mixed daylilies
for naturalizing." Instead they're on display alongside their named and
superior siblings, which only serves to bring them all down. If these
are the nurseries reporting low sales on daylilies then perhaps they need
to take a more introspective look at the problem.

Much like the mom-and-pops who are only open, like, Tuesday and Thursday
afternoons and then complain that Wal-Mart is putting them out of
business.

I'll pass the soapbox along to the next person now...
