RE: Phygelius (sp?)

Susan, I grow 4 different cultivars of Phygelius in my garden and in
nursery pots. One (Pink Elf) is in western exposure hot sun and is the most
full of the 4. The stems will fall over and self-layer making a nice full
shrub. One (Moonraker) is in southern exposure and gets the most sun but
not as much heat. It stays very upright and does not self-layer. Two are
newer plantings (African Queen and Winchester Fanfare) and are in part
shade. They do not bloom as well, but they do bloom. They are not as full
looking either. My conclusion is that they will take all the sun you can
give them, but are not water guzzlers. In a hard winter they will die to
the ground but regrow from the roots. Keep them deadheaded and they will
bloom for months until a hard freeze. Clump size about 4 ft wide, 4-6 ft.
tall depending on cultivar.

This plant is new in my garden and I'm quite impressed. I know the books
say sun and I think dry conditions are preferred? How much shade does this
plant tolerate in your experience? How fast does it spread/ultimate clump
size? Thanks for any input.
