Wait Lillian!  Don't plant that beast -- at least not until you've 
done a really thorough research on whether it becomes a problem in 
your area.  I've just returned from a weekend in the mountains of 
Southern California and to get to the mountains, we have to cross the 
desert.  In both mountain and desert areas, Tamarisk is a terrible, 
terrible pest!  It colonizes anywhere and becomes dominant 
particularly in dry areas where it sucks up all the water, 
outcompeting native plants.  Big Big problems!
