Re: Flower Factory

Barb,

I was given a couple of canna roots some years ago, probably the same
variety you have. Two years ago they had grown so large I just could not
lift them all. This happened in Solon, OH, zone 5. That winter I covered the
bed with fairly fresh horse manure, maybe 7 inch thick, thinking the
breaking down would keep the soil warm. It worked. Last winter I used grass
clippings with the same good result. We recently moved to St. Charles, IL,
also zone 5, and I will try heavy mulching here also. It saves you a lot of
hard work and the plants seem happier and even more vigorous after staying
in the ground. FYI the bed was out in the yard, not next to the house.
