RE: Flower Factory/Cannas

Question for the group: I was given some unnamed cannas by a friend - they
are bright red, not particularly large-flowered, but grew well without any
fussing about. Of course, the rhizomes must be lifted before winter here in
Wisconsin. But I may have gotten hooked - what other canna lilies are out
there that have done well for you? I have seen a picture of one with
spectacular variegated foliage - must search through the catalogs again.

Barb,

I have four Cannas. C. 'Durban' which has very, very dark red leaves,
tinged with green with bright red veins, the flowers are orange. IMHO, the
foliage is fantastic! I also have C. 'Striata' which has bright green
leaves with yellow veins and a thin red edge to the leaves, and orange
flowers. The first Canna I bought was un-named. It has dark red/purply
leaves and bright orange flowers. I bought another un-named Canna this year
which has creamy yellow flowers and light green leaves. I do find that they
spread quickly, are easy to look after and make a spectacular show. I lift
mine in winter too.

I understand that they can be grown in water and think that someone
mentioned this on the list a few months ago - has anyone grown them in
water? If so, how deeply can they be planted?
