Susan:
As usual, the growth of platycodon seems to vary from place to place. I
have some planted in dry shade (well, half-shade) that have nearly become a
nuisance from dropping seed. However, the original plant is blue, and most
of the seedlings are white. The clump is not what you'd call terribly
vigorous, but probably has 18 or 20 stems now (maybe 8 years old?). They do
seem to lean toward the sunlight, however.
I have another plant, pretty much in full sun, but that bed gets watered
often (not enough to make it soggy, just because the sun dries it out so
fast). It's been there for probably 5 years, and has 1 (count'em) stem.
Have not seen a single seedling, ever.
So, my guess is, some shade, and water isn't a major requirement.
Okay, all you folks in the NE stop yer whining about the weather! It's 103
here today, and we haven't had an rain to speak of for weeks. My husband
and I have a daily battle over who gets the sprinkler, just trying to keep
things alive. My current landscape has kind of a "crispy" theme...
