Nancy, I've never dug nor deadheaded my C. Lucifer, and they bloom just fine.
I think finding the right spot is probably the key. Mine are in clayish
soil at the inside corner of a fence. The plants that border the fence on
the outside shade the plants in the afternoon, but they grow tall for me,
over 3'. I haven't looked up their normal height, but I don't think this is
it, so they're reaching for the sun I guess.
