I had L.x gerardii Vedrariensis standing out all last winter in a pot
in S. Lincolnshire, so I guess it would probably be fine. But then I
have also risked L. cardinalis outside for the last two or three
winters. Neither plant has stood the test of a hard winter yet.

The L cardinalis that you are growing are hybrids with a south American
species, the way to tell is if the stems and leaves have a reddish cast to
them.
The true species should be hardy, but it has green stems and leaves.
The L. x gerardii Vedrariensis is not very hardy, again it has semi to
tropical "blood" in it. If I remember right it is rated for US zones 8-10.
