I question I have been pondering and hope someone can clear up for me.
Are Veronica (speedwell) and Salvia ( blue sage) in the same family? I
have both and they are lovely, a little different, but enough alike
that I wondered if possibly they are "kissing cousins"

The Veronicas are in the family Scrophulariaceae The salvia are in the sage
family - Lamiaceae or mint family.
The mint family is a large one including:
Ajuga
Teucrium
Origanum
Monarda
Mentha
Stachys
Nepeta
plus many many more plants found in our gardens, They have square stems and
Perfect flowers,(all the parts) The flowers have an upper and lower part to
the corola) the colored parts called petals) The leaves are paired in across
from one another on the stem, seed are produced one to a flower and is called
a nutlet.
The Scrophulariaceae is diffrent, another large family including:
Linaria
antirrhinum- snapdragons
Digitalis
Veronicastrum
Paulownia- trees with large showy flowers
Mimulus
Chelone
Penstemon
I do not think your interested in the technical differences, but if you look
at the lists of genre in each family you can get an idea of the differences.
There are many good sites on the net that deal with botany than can be very
helpful too.
