The RHS Index lists L. x gerardi 'Vedrariensis' as a hybrid of L.
cardinalis and L. syphilitica. They say Zone 7, and their Zone info
tends to be very conservative. The "tropical" species commonly used is
L. splendens which is native to Mexico; many Mexican plants have proven
to be much more winter-hardy than one might assume.

I have a 'Vedrariensis' which I've had for at least eight years;
originally bought it when I lived farther out in a colder Zone. It
survived the winter of '96 which killed everyone's Ajuga (which dispelled
the myth that Ajuga is un-killable).
