Hello Larry,
Gardening is a lot like the rest of life... there is no one answer to many
questions and the answer to your questions will not be found in one place.
I have a fairly decent reference library on gardening here behind me. A wall
of books about 9 feet high and four feet wide. Use the search engines quite a bit.
But... when I want to know the down and dirty with practical experience I ask
fellow gardeners on the various lists. On the rare occasions when there is no
answer to be found I go out and kill the plant on my own a couple of times until I
get it right, or give up. Then I may, or may not, have an answer to my own
question, perhaps experience to relay if someone else later asks the same question
I did earlier.
