Here in southeastern MA we have had great luck with Moonbeam. The first
few sprigs I got as gifts took hold well and in the last several years have
spread and thrived. They are in full sun. We had also bought some very
small pots from Bluestone last summer and by fall they were enormous - this
year even more spread. Again, in full sun. Beautiful plant - the foliage
is such a contrast to the coneflowers it borders.
You may remember I had also planted Rosea last spring (bare root) which I
got from Dutch Gardens. It never came up and we finally just replanted
over it. Surprise! This week one plant has come up and looks like it may
have a bloom or two, enough for me to identify if it is really the pink or
the yellow.
Question - our Moonbeam seems to flower vigorously mid-July but now is
nowhere as much. I had begun to "deadhead" obvious dead flowers but it is
such a time consuming job I gave up. Any hints on how to deal with it
after the first flush, and also other suggestions to keep it blooming fully
all season?
A related question - I also have Alma Potschke asters which I have been
pruning vigorously since June. They continue to grow taller than the plants
behind them. Next year they get moved :-) But for now, I just cut off
some of the tops and realized I had cut off budding sections. Will they
possibly still set buds before October which is when they are usually peaking?
Thanks.
