I know that Coreopsis 'Moonbeam' is often cited as a perfect plant for dry
and hot conditions. Our trials here indicate that while it will live in
those conditions, it will thrive and flower much more heavily when given
adequate moisture. In fact, if you plant it in a bog, you'll get great
flowering and better survival rates than if in hot and dry.(usda 4) In our
dry and sandy soils this hot dry summer, the coreopsis are alive (more than
I can say about some other perennials that have bitten the dust) but
certainly not flowering.
As for deadheading it - I suggest you have to be a bit compulsive to even
consider deadheading this plant by hand. ;-) Give it enough water and it
will take care of itself he says being the laziest gardener on this list.
In my garden the question is how can I make a plant thrive - not merely
survive. :-)
