RE: blue mist

Susan,
I just learned in a "Pruning Ornamentals for Effect" class last week that
you can prune Caryopteris & Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon) to 6-12" the
same as you can Buddleia. As per our discussion on this list a couple of
weeks ago "Stooling". I don't think I would prune the Caryopteris when it
finishes blooming (mid-late September here) because of forcing new growth so
late in the season that may not have a chance to harden off before frost.

Has anyone on this list grown Caryopteris 'First Choice'? It is a new
cultivar described as black buds, dark blue flowers. Darned if I can see
any black on my buds! They look the same as C. Dark Knight to me. I'm
wondering if I bought a mislabeled plant?

The blue mist caryopterix is blooming its head off. The bees love it. It
has seeded into the nearby scree bed. But it is too big and you can't walk
down the path anymore. Prune it back after flowering or in the spring with
the buddleias? Ditto question for the rose of sharon.
