Hi!
I have NEVER whacked all the foliage down - cleaned it, trimmed it, but never to the ground mid-season. I clean it in the fall and in the spring.
DiSabato's book might be talking about the Deep South and evergreen daylilies where it might be useful. Daylilies can really take a beating, but that seems over the top!
