Still dry, Walter? Didn't you get those awful storms last week? Three
people were killed by lightning in the Northeast last week, one in New York.
While they are not like an all day rain it does seem summers have developed
into a pattern of rain slacking off in late May and the water we get comes
from these electrical storms. September the rains begin again. I don't think
I would have described summer that way twenty years ago. Here in belt from
the Great Lakes through parts of Mass. we have have storm after storm so
there is no great shortage. Some of these storms paste the garden flat to
the ground when accompanied with wind.
Another thing I have notice the past few seasons is the quality of a flower
petal being weatherproof or not weatherproof. I have read this in catalogs
for years and ignored it. But, a weatherproof perennial is still there after
the storm (I don't say rain, but storm) and those that absorb water are done
by the storm. For example the Phlox Starfire survives everything and looks
fine while anothe cultivar, a nameless pink was totally destroyed - the
petals a brown mess after being rained on and was cut down the next day.
Zinnias survive all kinds of rain and look good., Cosmos do not.
I hope you get some rain Walter and skip the fireworks that go with it.
Increasingly, I am sort of nervous around lightning after having our house
struck a number of times and losing pole transformers and other things.
