RE: streaks on dark colors: daylilies

Claire,
When I was an African Violet grower, a classic symptom of Thrips was the
appearance of yellow pollen on the flower petals. This was presumably
because the Thrips were eating the pollen sacs. I never could see the
little varmints either!
On Gladiolus, Thrips make a rather unsightly streak on the leaves, but I
don't recall seeing damage on the flowers.
When I was in hort school, we monitored for Western Thrips using blue
sticky cards hanging over the GH benches. One could barely discern there
were black dots on the blue card if the Thrips count was high enough to
treat the crop. Scouting for insects takes really good eyes and a strong
loupe!

this happens often with the dark red and purple daylilies - moisture
(dew, rain, watering) or temperature changes the night before opening
are the usual culprits according to the daylily pundits. I have only
seen it when the temps are really high. >>

I have no idea what the real reason is either, but I have also seen this and
it does not happen to a plant every year. Some years the flowers will be
free of the streaks. When I was an active member our resident know-all said
it was thrips. Swore it was thrips. I never saw a thrip but then I did not
use a glass and go out there at dawn.
