I've finally caught up with all your posts - I was actually relieved when I
found that big bunch of digests that I didn't have to read! Let's see if I
can remember what I wanted to write about/respond to...
This spring I started seeds of Belamcanda 'Leopard Lily Mixed' from T&M
and some of pardancanda x norrissii from the NARGS seed exchange. The only
plant that has bloomed thus far came I THINK from the latter group. The
foliage from both groups is iris-like and identical and there is the same
long stem, but this flower is definitely iris-shaped, not like belamcanda or
what I thought the pardancanda was going to be. (Its shape is a lot like
that of the iris gracillipes I have from Blanchette's though the foliage is
totally different. It looks a lot better on the i.g., which is quite a small
plant.) I guess this is pardanthopsis?? That's one of the parents of the
bigeneric cross, isn't it? It hadn't occurred to me that the progeny would
revert as I thought the hybrid was stable. Of course, it could be that the
donor had the wrong name.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who doesn't like the color
combination in 'Norah Leigh' phlox.
Merri asked for a tall late purple aster. 'Hella Lacy' is wonderful.
Claire, please tell me more about the Australian places that have
phytosanitary-approved seeds to sell.
I know there was more and just can't remember. I suspect my brain is
parboiled. We reached 99 degrees today in my front yard, 100 in Boston. I
don't know how you folks down in SC do it all the time. My gardening
attitude stinks this year; maybe doing a garden tour last year is having
repercussions (watch out, Cheryl!). I marvel at how decent most of my
established perennials look considering my almost total neglect, but most
plants (including all annuals) that I started this spring have been really
disappointing. The only truly happy plants in my vegetable garden are some
apple gourd plants which are blanketing all the rest of the plants and I'm
letting them. Forgive the length of this post.
