How about deer? (also of concern to more and more of us).
Persian Shield--a very handsome plant. I grew it up near the house for two
summers and it got no supplemental water. I don't know if it would have
survived this year's drought, but it seemed to flourish in our usual
Cincinnati heat and humidity.
The second year's plants were cuttings from the first year's plants, just
held in glasses of water in the house over the winter. After the roots began
to appear, we transferred to plastic cups and began slowly to add soil to the
water until the roots were growing in soil. Planting out was uneventful.
It's an easy plant to grow.
As for deer, they don't usually come that close to the house, so I can't
state that they are deerproof.
