My balloon flowers are thriving, too - although I really don't like
their color.  They are a VERY washed out pinkish purple - quite ugly,
actually.  But I was under the impression that they remained under 2
feet high.  Mine are easily over 5 feet tall and still reaching!

I vote for the Blue Globe thistle (Echinops) in the heat and drought. 
Very prolific and quite lovely.  A goldfinch sitting on that lovely
blue globe makes them the prettiest thing in the garden!
