My angelica gigas was planted last year so it is blooming this year. It is really stunning. It is in part shade and doing fine, but I do keep it watered.
Living in Oregon, and having had very mild winters this year, what do you think about this? Let maybe ONE flower clump go to seed and cutting off everything else... and then cutting the plant itself back in the fall or early winter?

Well, Susan, my personal experience with this lovely species is that
I managed to kill it by planting it in a spot that got too dry. But,
I have successfully grown Angelica archangelica in my 'damp' garden.
It took it 3 years to bloom, when, of course, it set seed and died.
I have seedlings coming up and hope, one day, I'll have another
blooming plant. Awesome in size when they grow up.
If yours is not blooming then it may last another year. If it is
blooming, then let it set seed and sow some or Mother Nature will do
so for you if it sets anywhere the quantity of seed that mine did. I
have read that if you cut off the flower heads before they set seed,
the plant will come back the following year. Seeds need light to
germinate, so don't cover them.
My memory is getting worse and worse, but I think there was an
article on A. gigas by Barry Yinger a year or so ago in either
Horticulture Mag or The American Gardener...actually think it was
TAG. And, maybe the article was about Barry and talked about the
plant as a side issue. Really, sometimes I think my brain died
several years ago...most annoying.

wish I could find more, as I understand it is a biannual and this is
it for the show (this year). Cann anyone tell me more about this
plant?
