My plants have never died, just gotten twisted leaves from aphids.
For those of you who are interested, they are a fantastic dried flower. Pick them when they are still in the prickly stage, before the flowers get fuzzy. They last for two years keeping that beautiful blue color. Eventually they turn more gray than blue and need to be replaced.

Susan, My Blue Globe thistle (Echinops) has not had a single problem in
all the years I have had it. This year was the first time that about half
of it died off from the drought. The only reason it is not on my list of
recommended perennials is because it's bloom only lasts for a couple of
weeks.
