note worthy info

Pardon the cross posting..but felt that these news items would be of
interest to both lists..
Seems we seldom escape 'dues'when we seriously alter an environment.
Hope you share my interest.

* A study by scientists at Duke Univ. indicates that trees and shrubs
may
not be as effective as native grasses in removing carbon dioxide from
the
atmosphere. The study indicates trees and shrubs growing in rainy areas
of
the Western U.S. do not store carbon as effectively as the native
grasses
they have replaced. In wet areas, replacing grasses with trees and
shrubs
can decrease the amount of carbon in soil organic matter, said Robert
Jackson, associate biology professor. This decrease can be enough to
offset
the amount of carbon dioxide removed above ground. Jackson said more
attention needs to be paid to what happens below ground before
determining
what is stored by trees and shrubs above ground. jackson@duke.edu;

* Last week Denver authorities voted for stricter drought regulations
that
would eliminate all turf and lawn watering on Oct. 1, unless immediate
relief from drought comes. Hand watering and drip irrigation of trees,
shrubs and perennial gardens would not be prohibited. All operation of
outdoor water features would be eliminated and fines for violators would

double. http://www.denverwater.org
