Re: Gentians


Hello Don,
    As you can see, it is not easy to sort out the exact species of Gentiana
when dealing with the so-called "bottle" gentians of the eastern US. That
does not prevent them, however, from being great plants for late color. I
have a G. saponaria in my garden that I can count of being in bloom from
September through mid-December. In addition to the US species there are many
good Asian species that bloom in summer and fall. None are particularly
difficult to grow.
    Kind of hard not to get excited over gentiana... blue blooms among the
red, yellow and brown of falling foliage......
