Bed Making

Lynn,

As near everyone has had their say, I'll add mine.
I've made beds using near every method -including double digging -but
just a few weeks ago I dug all the daffodil beds out of one I made 3
years ago and it turned out to be the easiest digging ever.

I killed the grass with RoundUp. Went to the swimming pool company and
bought large (4 cu ft.) bags of what they call pool base. It's
vermiculite and the cheapest way I've found to buy it. Tossed about 4"
of that on the pile, tossed compost, coffee grounds, grass clippings,
dead leaves, etc. on. Until it was maybe 8" deep. Wet it all down.
Found some worms near the compost and threw those on. Covered with
cardboard boxes. Wet those down. Then I covered the boxes with pine
bark mulch, about 3-4" worth. Then just stood back for about 6 weeks.

I made an identical bed using newspaper instead on boxes. The crows had
a field day with the newspaper, found tidbits everywhere. They didn't
even try very hard to unseat the cardboard. I think the worms do it.
I'll never double dig or till a bed again. I did this toward the end of
August and planted bulbs in it in Oct.-Nov. Yes, I cut through some
cardboard to do it but it was still easy.
