Have you tried scraping them off?  They make a kind of plant glue to
hold on with and it is tough to remove, but a dull kitchen knife
blade might do the trick; tedious job there.  Sorta depends on what
kind of wood you're trying to remove them from.  If you want to
paint, might mean scraping and the sanding.  If it's rough wood, then
a wire brush might work.  Whatever method will leave a mark on the
wood, I think, based on removing them from tree trunks.

Those little suckers grab on to anything.  When they send out runners
into our gravel drive and I yank them up, I have to remove a ton of
rocks they've glommed onto and held onto.
