Barbara, they well could be perennial.  The perennial ones I have in my 
garden are East Friesland, verticillata 'Purple Rain', 'Knock-Out' and 'May Night'  
which is the most common here.  However, I also, have non-hardy Salvia 
guaranitica 'Black & Blue', van houtti 'Paul' and greggii 'Raspberry Royal'.
    Ceres, Iowa, zone 4/5
