    You are describing a good place for cardinal flower..... moist and part
shade. Perhaps it is the moving around that is giving the plant problems.
Mature plants of cardinal flower have tended to sulk for me when move about.
Never seem to come out of it. I have found that some fresh seeds sowed where
I want the plants to be works even better than transplants. Try some seed.
Cardinal flower is certainly worth a bit of extra trouble for the color at
this time of the year. Also hummingbirds love that plant.
