I have had them thrive and die. I have seen gardens where they do great but other people can't grow any of them. The one thing I noticed is that in the gardens where they thrived they were growing surrounded by dense growth of other plants or the crown was in heavy shade and the tops reach the sun. I think that they don't tolerate heat on the roots.
