I've spent several happy hours planning and designing my perennial beds for
next year. I've got all the big ones figured out, now there's just this one
smallish border in front of the house to figure out. I tried a hodge-podge of
things this year, but don't like it.
The border is about 15 x 4 feet in size, positioned against the front of the
house, with east exposure. It gets full sun for 5-7 hours a day. The soil is
fairly good.
Existing Shrubs that I'd like to keep:
¥ On the right edge, bordering the driveway: a mature French Lilac with a
"fringe" of daylily (the basic orange variety which I may get rid of)
¥ Small pyramid cedar (about 3 feet high)
¥ Creeping juniper (spread about 1 1/2 feet, 5 inches high)
¥ Dwarf yew (about 2 1/2 feet high)
¥ 2 small euonymous (one gold, one silver)
I was thinking about adding some heathers to keep the "rugged" look here - and
maybe some rocks. Anyone have any recommendations for Zone 4/5 hardy
heathers? If possible several varieties that bloom at different times through
the summer.
Any other ideas for what to grow with my existing shrubs: More dwarf shrubs?
Alpines? Ornamental grasses? Border perennials? All suggestions welcome.
Happy gardening,
