Re: Nepeta's

I grow four nepeta's:-

nepeta faassenii - the most ornamental plant with large purple flowers ( &
said to be less attractive to cats - but...)
nepeta camphorata - camphor scented with pure white flowers
nepeta cataria - flowers white spotted with pale pink
lemon catmint - lemon scented but otherwise very like cataria

My two cats love all the varieties - they eat them, roll in them, sleep
under them, jump around on them!! They get quite mad and over-excited
leaping about the place with lots of energy - apparently the nepeta's
contain similar chemicals to cat pheronomes (Sp??) .The cats are the worst
in spring with the tender new leaves - later in the season the plants get
some peace. I put short sticks in the centre of the plants to protect them,
otherwise every time the new shoots grow in the spring they get eaten or
broken off. They even ate some seedlings of camphorata right down to the
ground - a mystery for me as they were on a window sill and I came home one
day to bare soil in the pots where there had been seedlings - later on I
caught them eating another batch!
Am I the only one with totally crazy cats?
