Asters

I just bought an aster plant which has no tag.  How do I know whether
this is an annual aster or perennial?  It makes a difference where I
plant it.  This plant is about 18" high in the pot, with true-purple
pompom blooms which are about 3 or 4" across.  Before the blooms open,
they look white.  When they are fully open, they have a large yellow
centre.

Anyone out there familiar with this aster?
