It sounds like an annual aster, Callistephus chinensis. At least, I think
that's the correct genus name nowadays.
If you are lucky, the grower used a yellows-resistant variety, and the
aster yellows virus that the leafhoppers are sure to infect it with won't
kill it. Enjoy it while it lasts --- the first frost will kill it. It
makes a nice cutflower, too.
Check out the Stokes catalog for a description of what is available. The
Gales usually carry a nice selection of cutting asters.
