Siberian irises

I have a HUGE patch of siberian irises (I believe they are white but
they have not flowered in a couple of years) that I finally dug up and
divided last night. I don't know why I tackled this so late in the
evening, but I only got a small fraction replanted before dark. I
really didn't know how best to store them until I can get them planted.
I left them all trimmed and split and essentially soil-free in a pile in
the garage and then panicked all night about what I REALLY should have
done! So this morning (they looked a bit dried up) I covered them with
peat moss and add some water.

Must I plant these immediately? Can anyone give me some advice on the
best type of soil amendments? Should they be planted with the top part
of the rhizome exposed or should they be somewhat deeper? I really
couldn't tell which were the newer rhizomes and which were the parents -
they were in huge clumps and all looked healthy. Some rhizomes were of
course larger than others but I guess I'll try to replant them all.

Any advice is appreciated, esp. before I go home and try to plant more
tonight. I must have 100 of these!

Thanks much-
