RE: Question about necessity to plant Siberian Iris divisions immediately.
Last fall, I divided a HUGE (about 4' in diameter) clump of
Siberians. They also had not bloomed that year. Some were white,
some Caesars Brother, and some that I think of as 'Caesar's little
brother'; similar to CB, but shorter, less intense color and greener,
less erect foliage.
Some I divided into very small bits of rhizome. Some I left as larger
clumps, maybe 8" to 12" by 3". The larger clumps bloomed better this
year. There were two large clumps, about 12" in diameter, that I just
didn't have the strength to divide and plant. They sort of sat where
I'd tossed them for several weeks. I finally turned them roots down
and tossed a little dirt around them before the ground froze. This
spring, I stuck the entire clumps into the corner of a bed. They
bloomed great, and proved to be CLB.
Moral: SIs are pretty tough, at least in my experience. I wouldn't
loose any more sleep over yours. Get them in some dirt when you can.
Cut back the foliage to 6-8" and water well after you get them in the
ground.
Good luck,
