Hi Marge,
I think that the only important part it to ensure that the plant always has
access to some moisture. So, the better draining the soil, the more you
will need to water it. If it is too well looked after, it throws up lots of
leaves and very few flowers. Its one of those plants, of which there are
many, that need to feel threatened to flower well. However, although it has
a tough environment in the wild, it does always have access to moisture
under the rock layer.
