Reference books and experience tells me that in order to ensure that you'll
have this plant from year to year is to take cuttings in the fall and
overwinter them in a protected environment such as a greenhouse.  It seems
that it is a short-lived perennial, lasting no more than 2 or 3 years.

I am in zone 5/6, and this has held true for me.
