Diana, most of the things I grow in these are not hardy (like citrus),
since that's not a concern for me, but I do have things that are.
I've got a Royal Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star'), a
Rhododendron 'Fragrantissimum' (whoops-maybe not hardy enough!), and
somehow or other, I've wound up with some Pink Panda strawberries in
one. I think these are just beautiful, and I even get one or two
strawberries before the birds. I also have tree and herbaceous
peonies, as well as a Daphne. I use the ones in front for bulbs and
ericas. I have to put ericas in pots since the soil here is not
nearly acid enough for them, and I so love heaths and heathers
(Calluna vulgaris cultivars are very easy). I've got blueberries
there, too, again for soil considerations. I've got thornless
blackberries in them so they won't spread like crazy, although you've
got to watch for seedlings spread by birds. I really like fruit and
scented plants, so I tend to concentrate on things I can eat and that
smell good.

Hi:
I am preparing material for a website on growing perennials in
1/2 whiskey barrel containers for disabled gardeners. I would
like to develop a list of plants that others have used in this
setting--they must be winter hardy for northern gardeners.
Please send me the names of any you have overwintered
successfully this way.
Your suggestions will be compiled and listed on the webpage with
links to where they can get information about each plant. Thank
you for your help.
