Additional plants blooming now in my August gardens includes: Liatris,
Perovoskia, Achillea, Anemone, Veronicas, Solidago, Sedum, Michauxia,
Helenium, Ratibida, Calluna and the fall blooming Salvias, Liliums,
later Monardas, reblooming Catananche. The ornamental Oreganos subtly
brighten along with Lavenders, Hyssop. Also Bluebeard or Caryopteris
blooms. I think some of the Verbascums continue to bloom.
Don't forget the grasses. Many of them are in full bloom now. I'd
like to divide the grassses this fall but in El Nino's we have dry open
winters so the grasses won't compete with any snowfall and will remain
standing until spring. Anything I can do in the fall takes pressure off
spring garden work.
When I wandered around my garden today not looking for the errant weed
but rather looking for plants not mentioned in the discussion I noticed
that some grasses are crowding perennials too much. The Bluebeard looks
about four feet tall rather than its described two foot height. The red
leaved Penstemon 'Husker's Red' long since bloomed continues to add to
the garden with its red leaves and seedheads. It's time to tweak the
arrangement just a bit.
Someone mentioned Amsonia now in bloom. My seed grown plants were
eaten within hours of setting out and I haven't tried the plants again.
Is anyone growing Amsonia in a cool summer area? Maybe it's time to
order some new seeds and try again.
Best, Vicki
