For tight spots like this, I like Rose of Sharon (Althea). It's foliage is
not outstanding, but certainly better than a lilac, it flowers in the dog
days of August when it is most welcome, and most of them have a very upright
habit--especially at the base, they "fountain" a bit at the top. The seed
pods hang on for a bit of winter interest, as well.
There are some nice hybrids on the market right now that stay a bit more
compact than the old-fashioned kind. I have a Lucy (double pink), a Blue
Bird (single almost-true-blue) and a Diana (large white single) that are
working out well for me.
Not sure if it's hardy in your zone though.....anyone?
