RE: Question on hydrangea color

Hi Marion!

There are many hydrangea varieties, and all they have their particular
color shade. In white, there are various hues of white, and the same
happens in pink, red and blue...
An hydrangea flower goes from the very green start, when is developping
itself at bud stage, towards the pure green developping, then the green
pales till there is a moment when the color is pure. This ideal stage can
last for more or less time deppending on variety, weather, etc... and the
pure color changes getting hues of other colors (in the good varieties
usually green, old pink, grey blue...) or just shrivel away and get death
brown. The varieties that get beautiful at this very special moment when
autumn comes are of course the ideal ones for drying. Dried hydrangeas are
most useful flowers for dry floral arrangements.
Your young white hydrangea will have certainly a moment when she's pure
white. It could also happen that due to too heavy shade the green cast
prevails all time: then a move for next year to a sunnier site should be
done. Hydrangeas do not flower well in deep shade anyway, getting lanky and
poor.
If your neighbours white hydrangeas are pure white whilst yours is green,
check how much more sun do receive his plants, or it might be well possible
that these are a different variety to yours...
My favorite white hydrangea is 'Madame Emile Mouillière' (I live in Europe,
don't know if this classic white hydrangea will be available near you), a
very vigorous big bush very flowering, in huge white balls that as they go
old into late summer and fall get hues of pink. Good for drying too. A much
less vigorous cultivar, with less flowers and smaller is 'Soeur Therese':
it is quite famous for the pureness and coolness of its rare white. Whilst
'Mme. Mouilliere' is wonderful in full sun to half shade, 'Soeur Therese'
much prefers cooler and shadier surroundings...

Hydrangeas are WONDERFUL plants, aren't they???
