Barb, it can suffer if there is a rock or other obstruction
below. Did you double dig this bed? There also might be an
airpocket if the soil isn't real crumbly. I'd dig the whole
thing up and investigate the area. At the same time you can
have a look at the roots, which will likely tell you a lot.
At that point you can decide whether to replant it there or move
it. Since there is green, give it a nice home with lots of
water and prune it way back. It might survive for you yet.
