Hi everyone,
Early this spring, when my poppies bloomed (four flowers) I was
enraptured for about three days. That's when I discovered that their
bloom period is all too brief. For many weeks thereafter I had the
foliage, which grew uglier with each passing day. When I finally cut
it all back a couple of weeks ago, I was, quite naturally, greeted
with a large bare area in my garden.
In "The Well Tended Perennial Garden" I read that the author, or
else a friend of hers, cuts back her poppies (foliage and all)
immediately after bloom time. I wondered if anyone else on this list
has ever done that. For some dumb reason, I thought that, like
daffodils and tulips, the foliage had to die back naturally.
The point is that if this really works, this fall I could plant
something right in front of the poppies in the bare spot left from the
foliage. If it was something that was going to bloom later than the
poppies then it could take over, after I cut the poppies back. Does
anyone think this is feasible ?. I sure would like to hear from
someone who had cut their poppies to the ground immediately after
blooming. Especially if they didn't kill their plant!!
