Poppies again -Reply

If you are talking about *perennial* poppies, I
just plant them near something that's going to
get big and blooms later, like mums, to hide
their ratty foliage. I do let mine die naturally, I
don't know if this is necessary or not for good
production of flowers next year, as it is with
bulbs. I like the seedheads of thesein my
garden, ribbed with burgandy, for most of them.

For annual poppies, this works as well. These I
let go to seed for next year and save the seed.

Hi everyone,
Early this spring, when my poppies bloomed
(four flowers) I was
enraptured for about three days. That's when I
discovered that their
bloom period is all too brief. For many weeks
thereafter I had the
foliage, which grew uglier with each passing
day. When I finally cut
it all back a couple of weeks ago, I was, quite
naturally, greeted
with a large bare area in my garden.
In "The Well Tended Perennial Garden" I
read that the author, or
else a friend of hers, cuts back her poppies
(foliage and all)
immediately after bloom time. I wondered if
anyone else on this list
has ever done that. For some dumb reason, I
thought that, like
daffodils and tulips, the foliage had to die back
naturally.
The point is that if this really works, this fall I
could plant
something right in front of the poppies in the
bare spot left from the
foliage. If it was something that was going to
bloom later than the
poppies then it could take over, after I cut the
poppies back. Does
anyone think this is feasible ?. I sure would
like to hear from
someone who had cut their poppies to the
ground immediately after
blooming. Especially if they didn't kill their
plant!!
