I am interested in propagating cane plants. Ornamental cane. I don't know
the botanical name or even for sure that this it the correct name. The
plant
was given to me. It is about 4 feet tall, looks like a smaller version of a
corn plant only is variegated. I have had it going on the third year and it
hasn't increased all that much. I would like to increase it for purposes of
retail sales and was wondering if anyone knows if I need to dig and divide
it, make root cuttings or ????. I don't believe it has any seed as I have
not noticed any. Any information on identity or propagation will be
appreciated. Thanks,

Jean;
This is possibly Arundo donax 'Variegata Superba' or 'Variegata' var.
versicolor (commonly known as Giant Reed ). Zones 6-10 with the variegated
being less hardy. Perennial grass with alternate broadly linear, flat
leaves borne on thick reed-like stems and terminal feathery flower
panicles. Prefers moist conditions with full sun. Will make large clumps
when allowed to become established.
If you have Hort. A-Z Ency. of Garden Plants there is a picture of
versicolor pg. 143.
"Propagation: Sow seed in containers in cold frame in spring. Divide
rootstock in mid-spring. Root sections of stems in water-filled tray
mid-spring to mid-summer; pot up and keep moist."
Hope this helps;
Martha
