Just to keep things straight, O. nutans is also known as Dove's Dung and
Star of Bethlehem. Star of Bethlehem because of the very white flowers and
Dove's Dung because of their tendency to appear almost everywhere in the
garden. Ornithogalum comes from Greek - ornis=bird and gala=milk hence the
corruption to Dove's Dung. A native to Europe and SW Asia, it is now
naturalizing (hort speak for becoming a weed) in the E. North America.
Will it replace Alstromeria? Well, maybe....
Will it spread around in your garden and lawn? Absolutely.
Do I have it in mine? Nope, I have O. umbellatum instead - a somewhat
shorter form with the same habit and I do like it, but have to control it.
Just put it where it can't do much harm.
Doug.
