Diana,
Well, IMHO, X Cupressocyparis leylandii (Leyland Cypress) will rival any
Poplar in speed of growth! The only thing I've found with this plant is
that the tops often grow faster than the root systems, it seems, and they
are prone to being toppled by wind and in need of staking until they get
their act together. Of course, depends a lot on how big they are when
planted. I think it's best to plant them small, so the tops and roots are
more in sync. In 10 years, your Leylands ought to be over 30' tall. They
can get 60' or so, I hear - mine haven't hit that yet. One other note,
they don't like to dry out although they want good drainage. If they get
too dry, the needles on the inside brown off and die. I've got about 4
different cultivars - they can be very nice plants, if suited. They don't
like too much shade and will die out at the bottom if they get it (voice of
sad experience). You can keep them at almost any height you want - make a
good sheared hedge, if shearing is started early and done religiously. Do
not re-sprout from old wood.
