Grass in the middle of herbaceous perennials is easily controlled with
Roundup or other glyphosate products. Use the glove in glove system. Put on
a good, long-sleeved rubber glove and then OVER TOP of the rubber glove, put
on a cloth glove. Spray the chemical on the cloth glove and then gently
stroke the leaves of the offending weed leaving a sheen of moisture on the
leaf. Two weeks later the leaves will be dead and brown and the perennial
will be untouched. Alternately, 7 days after touching, the leaves can be cut
back as they're dead and don't yet know it.
This works particularly well in rock gardens or in hens and chicks
(sempervivum) which as everyone knows are covered with grass seed BEFORE
they leave the nursery. :-)
