Hi Rachel. You wrote:
Took some 1 gal pots and put in rocks, good
soil, bulb food and dalihas. Then I
buried them to just above ground level so I
could easily locate them for the

also worked very well to keep down
the slug damage. The smaller bulbs have grown
nicely and are blooming. The
dinner plate variety have
grown tall with nice leaves but no sign of buds.
one of them acted like it was water starved and
dieing, so I dug
out the pot and put him directly into the
ground. It was very root
bound and so that explained his hanging head
and tongue.
That would also explain transplant shock,
especially in the heat we've been having. I
don't know how well they'll recover, just can't
say. LOTS OF WATER -- the magic ingredient
for our summers, the cross to bear in our
winter. If they look bad, a little half-strength
fertilizer watered in well and not applied when
its over 85+, if they look okay, full strength,
but probably nothing with lots of nitrogen or
they'll just put on more growth, not flower
buds. Alaska fish fertilizer puts out a "More
bloom" product that works great for me when
the annuals are growing but not making
flowers. Freddies sells it.
I was very lazy last year and left mine in the
ground (only survived because of our mild
winter) so they are huge and having been
blooming for 1-2 months at this point, whereas
the ones I planted late spring are just now
blooming.
Now he looks great but still no sign of buds on
any except the smaller ones.
It might just take awhile. They will bloom
until hard frost, so don't give up yet!
I'm wondering if it is just because they are
different plants
Well yes, the size has a lot to do with it. My
dinner plate dahlias are HUGE and it takes a
while for those buds to mature, kinda like full
roses, vs. single roses.
Let me know how they do!
