Hi Barbara. I recently purchased Stevie Daniells excellent handbook on
"The Wild Lawn" and she notes 3 ways of getting rid of your present lawn
area.
Smother it with wood chips, newspaper, plywood, plastic or other medium
(she notes that you can even cover it with sand and newspaper and just
plug in your new plants with out waiting for the lawn to die back)
Remove it mechanically with a sod-cutter or by hand
Chemically remove with Round-up Kleen up or Sharpshooter. (the least
favored of all the solutions offered)
She does not mention your lime and fertilizer combination and unless you
have experience with mixing these type of chemicals, I'd go very easy on
experimentation.
Since hubby squelched my layering newspaper to get rid of the front lawn
idea, I have decided to go with tarps staked down with tent stakes over
winter..less labor intensive and they wont blow around as much.
we ended up with newspaper all over the yard after a few hot days dried
all the paper out then a wind came up and sent them flying...
